GENERAL SAFETY GUIDELINES

  • All workers to be covered under ESI/PF.
  • All workers/supervisors to wear safety helmets, safety shoes & reflective jacket at site at all times.
  • All the additional safety measures to be taken for working aloft or hot work shall be adhered to strictly.
  • A halogen or any other light shall be used whenever working at night or in any area with diminished lighting,
  • Make sure the area surrounding the work area is kept safe at all times.
  • Make sure the safety signs and posters are posted at site at various locations as well as near the site office,
  • Attendance to be taken every morning so that the project leader is in the know how of how many workers are at site on any given day.
  • Make sure the site office and store are kept clean at al times. All material, tools should be stacked properly. Nothing should be thrown around.
  • No tools or material should be left at site. It can cause obstruction or even accidents if people are unaware of it.
  • Make sure caution tape is used whenever an area has to be cornered off for some work.
  • Make sure all safety items and first aid box as per company guidelines are present at site at all times. Anything used or consumed shall be replenished at the same time.
  • Any electrical connections being made shall have a plug no direct wire connections shall be made.
  • Make sure sand buckets are always kept near the DG set, in case there is an oil leakage (to prevent fire hazards)
  • Make sure all the tools, lifting equipment, welding sets etc. have been tested and there are no shortcomings.
  • Make sure all the material and tools being used at site have a valid test certificate.

CONSTRUCTION SAFETY GUIDELINES

Safety is the primary concern on the job site. You should be cautious at all times and ask questions if you are unsure about any situation. We will provide all equipment necessary for your safety like hard hats, gloves, safety shoes etc. If you witness unsafe behavior, please inform the site supervisor immediately. The following sections about safety equipment, teamwork, hazard and accident prevention, ladders, hand tools, and power tools have been created to make you more aware of safe practices on the job site.

Minors

No Youth under the age of 18 is permitted to work at site.

Safe Mindsets

Safety begins with the way we approach our work on the job site. When you are conscious of the safety of yourself as well as others, you are much more likely to avoid accidents.

  • THINK before you do your work or task.
  • When uncertain about how to do a task or operate a tool
  • ASK a supervisor. Always concentrate on the task at hand.
  • Know where the first –aid kit is located and how to get emergency help.
  • Inspect all tools, ladders and scaffolding before using.
  • Advise your site supervisor IMMEDIATELY of any unsafe condition.

Safety Equipment

Clothing

  • Do not wear loose clothing.
  • Restrain long hair.
  • Remove loose jewelry, such as necklaces and bracelets.
  • Wear safety shoes or boots, Sneakers are also acceptable.

Hard Hats

  • Wear a hard hat while framing, shingling, or when required by the supervisor.
  • Use a strap when working overhead to prevent your hard hat from falling on workers below.
  • Wear plastic hard hats when working near electrical lines. Metal hard hats and bump caps conduct electricity and are shock hazards.

Other Safety Equipment

  • Wear safety glasses when working with any power tool and when recommended by the supervisor.
  • Wear ear protection when working with power tools for a prolonged period of time.
  • Wear dust masks when installing insulation, sanding or when instructed by a supervisor.
  • Hard hats, safety glasses, ear protection, and dust masks are provided at the site.

Teamwork

Do not lift heavy objects by yourself, ask for assistance.

Follow the instructions below when lifting and moving heavy objects:

  • Clear the pathway of any possible trip hazards, such as extension cords, debris, and power tools.
  • Cables not to be on the ground but always overhead and supported safely.
  • Set one foot alongside the load and the other foot slightly behind the load.
  • Grip the load firmly.
  • Keep the object close to you as you lift with your legs (not with your back).
  • Avoid jerking the load upward.

Hazard and Accident Prevention

Clean Work Site

  • A clean workplace is a safe workplace. Accidents happen more readily when loose objects lie around on the jobsite.
  • Position building materials and supplies in carefully laid out piles to allow adequate aisles and walkways. Do not bend nails over.
  • Pick up any trash, including loose bolts, empty cans, pipe, wire, strapping material, and small pieces of vinyl siding that accumulate on the work site.
  • Return tools that are not in use to the storage shed or toolboxes.

Working on the Roof

  • Stay off the roof unless you are working there.
  • Work away from the edge of the roof.
  • Remove trip hazards, such as sawdust and debris, from roof.
  • Haul materials and tools up by line or have them handed up to you. Do not carry these items when climbing a ladder.
  • Do not tarpaper over holes in the roof.

Additional Accident Prevention Information

  • Do not throw objects from the roof; falling objects can injure volunteers working below.
  • Think about a task before rushing into it, and follow the supervisor’s instructions.
  • The first aid kit is kept in the tool shed or at the site host table.

Ladders

General Information

  • Inspect all ladders for loose rungs, steps, and cross braces before use. Report any safety concerns to the supervisor.
  • Do not use unsafe ladders.
  • Place ladders on level ground to prevent them from falling. If there is danger of the ladder moving, level the ground, tie it down, or have another volunteer steady it.
  • Use the four-foot rule; for every four feet of height, move the bottom of the ladder one foot from the wall.
  • Only use ladders that will extend above the work. Extend ladders at least 3 feet above the top of the landing.
  • Position ladders away from doorways and other high traffic areas. - Face the ladder when climbing.
  • Use both hands when climbing a ladder. If you must carry tools, use proper carrying devices such as tools belts.
  • Move the ladder to reach your work instead of leaning away from the ladder to reach the work. If both shoulders are extended outside the ladder, you have reached too far.
  • Do not use an aluminum ladder when working near power lines because it can conduct electricity.
  • Do not use ladders during poor weather or on windy days.

Stepladders

  • Open stepladders fully and lock both spreader bars.
  • Do not use stepladders on top of scaffolds, platforms, or other surfaces above the ground.
  • Never stand above the second step from the top of the stepladder.
  • Do not leave unattended tools, such as hammers, on top of ladder.
  • Dismount stepladder before moving it. Do not “walk” the ladder.

Straight Ladders

  • Do not use sections of extension ladders as straight ladders.
  • Set base of ladder firmly on the ground and secure the top with nails.
  • Extend ladder at least 3 feet above the top of the landing.

Scaffolding

  • Inspect all scaffolding each day before using it. Never use damaged or defective equipment and avoid rusted parts since their strength is unknown.
  • When erecting scaffolding, provide adequate sills for the scaffold posts and use base plates.
  • Use adjusting screws, not blocks, when on an uneven grade. Make sure to plumb and level scaffolding and do not force end braces when constructing the scaffolding.
  • Use only properly graded and inspected lumber for planking. Inspect planking daily for splits and knots, and remove defective or damaged planking.

Hand Tools

General Information

  • Do not use tools with loose handles, dull blade, or if in poor condition.
  • Select the proper type and size of tool for your work.
  • Clean oil and dirt from tools before and after usage.
  • Hold tools correctly. If you are uncertain, ask the supervisor. Carry tools with care.
  • Keep edged and pointed tools turned down and away from yourself. Carry only a few tools at a time unless secured in a toolbox or tool-belt.
  • Do not carry sharp or pointed tools in your pocket. Store tools in toolboxes, chest, or cabinets when they are not in use.

Utility Knife

  • Retract blade after each use.
  • Do not cut toward yourself.
  • Carry knives in apron pocket or toolbox.

Hammer

  • Carry hammers in tool belts or loops while not in use.
  • Do not hit hammer faces together.

Power Tools

General Information

  • A power tool should not be used without proper instruction from a qualified person on its use, including a demonstration, and on the consequences of improper use.
  • Do not use any power tool without the site supervisor approval.
  • Check power tools for defective switches, cords, plugs, and proper grounding. Report any safety concerns to the supervisor.
  • Wear safety glass when operating power tools.
  • Do not remove any safety devices.
  • Do not lower or carry a power tool by its cord.
  • Clean tools daily or when a task is finished.

Avoid electric shock by

  • Using properly grounded power tools. All power tools should have three- Pronged plugs.
  • Avoiding extension cords with frayed insulation.
  • Unplugging tools before repairing or replacing parts.

Emergency Medical Care

  • If someone is injured on the job, contact your supervisor and safety officer immediately and summon any needed medical help. You also should use the supplies located in the first-aid kit to stabilize the injury as much as possible until medical help arrives.
  • Insurance forms necessary to obtain emergency medical care are located in every first-aid kit.

HOUSEKEEPING GUIDELINES

The Project leader and the safety officer to make sure all personnel at site directly or indirectly employed by ‘GREENWAVE’ to follow the rules of basic hygiene and keep the site, site office and store clean at all times.

All personnel when at site shall follow the following basic rules -

  • No garbage to be thrown at or near the site. All trash to be discarded in proper dustbins
  • Any tools or material taken from the store to be stacked back properly in the store at the end of the day after finishing work.
  • No tools to be thrown around at site. All tools in use shall be kept on the side and maintained properly.
  • While working make sure not to damage the work of other contractors.
  • Refrain from spitting or dirtying the site in any way.

RESPONSIBILITIES

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE PROJECT LEADER

The project leader is the representative of the company at the site for the client. He should at all times adhere to the safety standards of the client as well as ‘GREENWAVE’. He is responsible for the safety of all employees as well as the sub contractors.

His safety responsibilities include but are not limited to the following –

  • Make sure all personnel report for morning toolbox meeting.
  • Make sure the safety officer conducts the toolbox meeting as per the company guidelines.
  • Make sure all the workers and supervisors wear all the necessary personal protective gear (Safety helmet, safety shoes, reflective jacket, safety gloves, safety goggles and full coveralls) suited to the nature of work being done by them.
  • Make sure all workers maintain the area of work clean and free of any obstructions during and after work.
  • Make sure all the required permits are filled and all guidelines in the permit are adhered to before commencing any job.
  • To keep the company and client informed of any dangerous occurrences at site which could lead to any accidents
  • Guide the safety officer in conducting monthly safety meetings as per the company format.
  • Make sure all the safety equipment as per company guidelines is present at site at all times.
  • Make sure the first aid box has all the necessary items as listed in the company guidelines.
  • Make sure all the workers are covered under ESI/PF and their attendance records are maintained.
  • Make sure every new worker goes through safety training before he is allowed to work on site.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE SAFETY OFFICER

The safety officer has the prime responsibility of maintaining company safety standards at site. He is the company’s safety representative at site. He has to ensure every single employee and sub contractor follows the company’s safety guidelines at all times.

His safety responsibilities include but are not limited to the following –

  • He must assist the project leader in enforcing all company safety guidelines.
  • He has to conduct the toolbox meeting every morning as per the designed format.
  • Make sure all the workers and supervisors wear all the necessary personal protective gear (Safety helmet, safety shoes, reflective jacket, safety gloves, safety goggles and full coveralls) suited to the nature of work being done by them.
  • He must be on site whenever any critical operation is being carried out and make sure it is being carried out with utmost safety and no shortcuts are being exercised.
  • Make sure all the required permits are filled and all guidelines in the permit are adhered to before commencing any job.
  • Has to maintain a record of all work permits issued along with their serial numbers.
  • To conduct monthly safety meeting as per company guidelines and send detailed report to the head office.
  • To take a regular inventory of the safety equipment and first aid box to make sure nothing depletes below the minimum requirement as laid out in the company guidelines.
  • To inform the project leader of any dangerous occurrences at site that could lead to any accidents.
  • Make sure proper housekeeping is maintained during and after work.
  • He has to conduct attendance of workers every morning.
  • He has to give proper safety training to any new worker before he starts work.
  • Make sure all the personal protective gear in store and at site is in good shape.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF ASSISTANT SUPERVISORS

The Assistant supervisors have to assist the leaders in enforcing all company safety guidelines. They have to make sure all the workers in their respective departments are following all company safety guidelines

His safety responsibilities include but are not limited to the following –

  • Be a part of the tool box meeting every morning and make sure all the workers working under him are a part of it too and have grasped all the points explained to them.
  • Make sure all the workers are aware of all the safety guidelines
  • To supervise all the work under him and make sure it is done with the best safety standards.
  • Make sure all the workers have all the necessary personal protective gear before they start work.
  • Assist the safety officer in filling and maintaining of permits.
  • Report any dangerous occurrences at site to the safety officer or project leader.
  • Make sure the right tool is being used for the job.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF CONTRACTING SUPERVISORS

The Sub Contractors also have to act as employees of the company as comfort engineers have hired them. They must follow all the safety guidelines of the company .

His safety responsibilities include but are not limited to the following –

  • Make sure all their workers are covered under ESI/PF and have their cards on them at all times.
  • Make sure all their workers have all the necessary personal protective gear for the job assigned to them. No worker to be allowed to work with safety equipment or with sub standard equipment.
  • Make sure all his workers are part of the daily toolbox meeting.
  • To maintain proper housekeeping at the store and at the site.
  • To report any dangerous occurrences at site to the assistant supervisor/safety officer.
  • Make sure none of his workers start work before they undergo comprehensive safety training.
